What does the diameter of wires and cables depend on?

Factors affecting cable diameter

1. Current

The diameter of the wire affects its current carrying capacity; thicker wires can carry a larger current.

2. Resistivity

ρ is the resistivity. It can be seen that the resistance of a material is directly proportional to its length with constant material and cross-sectional area, longer length results in greater resistance and inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area with constant material and length, larger cross-sectional area results in lower resistance. From the above formula, the resistivity is defined as: ρ = RS/L, where L is the length of the material and S is the area.If the wire is thinner, the resistance is greater. In power transmission, high voltage is often used, and higher resistance means greater energy consumption. High voltage power consumption is extremely high, so power plants and power grids use very thick wires.

3. Power

Power is related to current, and current is related to cross-sectional area. Therefore, the diameter of the wire or cable is related to its power: Power = Voltage x Current.
